The definition of a system

  • source: Thinking In System : Primer
    • set of elements + connected + achieves something.
      • 3 things
        • elements
          • interconnection
            • functions / purpose
            • Basic examples
              • A football team
                • Elements : Ball, players, coach, field.
                  • Interconnections: the rule of the game, the law of physics that govern the ball.
                    • Purpose / function : To win the game, to have fun, to make millions of dollars
                    • Digesting system
                      • Elements: Teeth, enzymes, stomach
                        • Interconnections: physical flow of food, regulating chemical signals
                          • Purpose: To breakdown food into its basic nutrients and transfer those nutrients and energy to the bloodstream (which is another system)
                          • A school
                            • A city
                              • A factory,
                                • national economy
                                  • animal
                                    • tree
                                      • earth
                                        • solary system
                                          • galaxy
                                          • Notes
                                            • System can exist within another system (embedded)
                                            • How to determine if something is a system or not
                                              • Questions
                                                • Is it possible to identify the parts
                                                  • Does one part affect another part
                                                    • Doeso the part combined produce different effect compared to one part alone
                                                      • Does the effect persist in variety circumstances
                                                    • Notes: identifying the elements is a lot easier than identifying the interconnections between the elements
                                                      • For example the connection between the root and the leafs and the trunk.
                                                        • When the leaves lose water (sunny day).
                                                          • It will drop the pressure in vessels that carry the water.
                                                            • This thing will allow the root to carry more water.
                                                            • When the root found out that the soil is dry.
                                                              • It sends the signal to the leaves that to close the pore so that the tree doesn't lose the water.
                                                            • In this case, identitying the part is easy, but understanding how they're connected to each other, how they work togetehr, how one part affect the other part is harder.
                                                              • And after figuring out how they are interconnected to each other. Figuring out the goal of the internet connections (the goal of the system is a lot harder)
